other stuff

Hello! The computer had to pay a little visit to the doctor recently, which is one of the main reasons why I’ve been absent. It was nothing serious, just a bit of preventive cleaning – but I can tell you it was well needed. When I picked it up today, in addition to the maintenance report and invoice, I got a little plastic bag with a chunk of felted dust – the stuff they took out of it. A true testament to the need for these cleanings (and to my computer doctor’s sense of drama, I reckon.)

I’ve been knitting very little, too. The temperatures here are slowly settling into their summer levels (we’re around 30 Celsius now, and it’s only going to go up), and while that doesn’t really prevent me from knitting usually, it made me feel like a break, and like doing some other stuff. So I whipped out my weathered, but reliable, Ice Coffee shaker…

…and let this book pull me in like a whirlwind – I just couldn’t put it down. I must have read 300 pages in two days. That hasn’t happened in a while, so I highly recommend it.

I hope you have something cool and yummy to drink and something irresistable to read this weekend! See you on Monday :)

About fridica

I started knitting completely by accident, when I was visiting my parents for a holiday in 2008. On a boring Sunday afternoon, I decided to dig through their stash of books to see if there was anything interesting to take back to my apartment. A knitting manual happened to be one of the books I found. I got curious, my mom immediately dug out her old needles and yarn stash (which she hadn’t used in a decade at least), and in a few minutes we were both casting on - she by memory, I by following the instructions from the book… :) Since I normally prefer learning from books, this was ideal.. I took the book home with me, and very very soon - I was an addict.

  1. Actually, I’m not anymore! I finished it! :D I really really loved it, though. Lately I’ve found that very few books give me that “don’t wanna stop reading” feeling, which is sad for me as a former literature major… So I really relish the ones that make me feel like that again, and this one was definitely one of those!

  2. Glad your computer is fixed. Thanks for the book recommendation. I appreciate a good read. Thanks for the Neil Gaiman recommendation too. It is my son’s birthday tomorrow so I have bought him a couple of his books. I hope you enjoyed his Dr Who episode. Did you see the Dr Who Confidential about that episode? He was reading his own script. He was enchanting.

    • Aaaaaaaaw I’ve been meaning to ask you about that! I’m so happy you took up the recommendation, and please let me know what he thinks of the books, I’m always curious to hear what new readers make of them :) I loved the episode, it’s definitely one of my favourites, and I saw the Confidential twice too :)

By the way, since you liked his reading – if you go to his blog, you can listen to him read the entire “The Graveyard Book” for free. When it came out, he did the book tour in such a way that he read a chapter at each tour stop, and then uploaded all the videos for free on his website. It’s all here: http://www.neilgaiman.com/p/Cool_Stuff/Video_Clips/The_Graveyard_Book_Tour

  3. Yes – I am always looking for something ‘unputdownable’, and have just finished ‘the thousand autumns of Jacob de zoet’ so am looking for something new.

  4. That book is also on my list! Right now I’m listening to Saving CeeCee Honeycut and so far It’s a really good book! The reader is great!
I know exactly what you mean when you say that you need a break from knitting, It’s almost summer time, so much to do outside! It happens to me too.
    Enjoy your weekend!

  5. Oh, am I jealous of your summery weather. This weekend is supposed to kick off the summer season in the US, and here in northern Midwest of the country it’s still just too cold and rainy. I could probably still be wearing my winter sweaters. I should definitely work on knitting some spring/summer ones, if only I had the yarn…

    • Yay! I’m actually quite surprised by how many people know about it! A friend lent it to me and I kind of just assumed it was some random unknown book… :)
